Tinkler and Williams Theatre Collections

Scope and Content

Press-cuttings books of reviews of productions in Norwich theatres for the 20th century to c.1980. The Williams volumes are deposited in the Norfolk Studies Library, with a microfilm version held at the UEA Library. Programmes, mostly from Norwich, but including a few from other Norfolk towns and from some London theatres for the late 19th century.

Postcards and photographs of performers and of some venues, chiefly relating to Great Yarmouth, from the early 20th century.

Chronologies of Norfolk theatre performances covering the period 1757-1985.

Miscellaneous items relating to Norfolk and East Anglian theatre, including unpublished histories of Gilbert's Circus in the Agricultural Hall, Norwich, and of Great Yarmouth Hippodrome - possibly the first purpose-designed indoor circus to be built in England.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Tinkler and Williams Theatre Collections comprise two substantial collections, and incorporates a number of minor deposits from various individuals. The Tinkler collection was created by Mr H.T.G. Tinkler (1902-1994) and was partly sold and partly gifted to the University of East Anglia (1981). The Williams collection was created by Alick Williams and gifted to the University of East Anglia in 1991.
