The idea of a savings bank for Coventry was first mooted in 1828. The original plan failed because businessmen feared that the circulation of money would be stemmed and the capital of the town would be attracted to London.
However, the notion had taken root and as such Hertford Street branch was opened by Coventry Savings Bank on 1 June 1835 in a small room on Little Park Street. In no less than twelve months the bank accumulated credit of £4000.
On 14 November 1940 the Head Office of Coventry Savings Bank was hit by a blitz on the city in which 60,000 out of the 75,000 buildings in the city were destroyed. Head Office was put out of action for months.
In 1975 the bank became a part of the TSB Midlands Group.
