Mount Melville estate papers

The estate collection includes: incoming letters, 1901-36; letter books, 1900-27; vouchers, 1819-40; correspondence, 1923-30; cashbooks, 1900-32; ledgers, 1900-05, 1923-27; Factors' account books, 1905-21; rentals, 1924-27; annual accounts and auditors' reports, 1902-53; farm records including work books, day books, accounts and cashbooks for: Mount Melville farm, 1923-47; Lumbo farm, 1923-24; Denbrae farm, 1918-22; Traigh farm, Arisaig, 1919-23; forestry papers 1913-39.

The Mount Melville estate was the home of James Younger and family, of the scottish brewing family, William Younger and Co,. of Edinburgh. The house was designed by architect Paul Waterhouse (1861-1924) and was built about 1900. It was handed over to Fife Council in the late 1940's and the house became a maternity hospital and, briefly, an old people's home before being bought by the Old Course Hotel, St Andrews in 1992. There are plans for the house to become a luxury golf and country club. The grounds became Craigtoun Country Park. Mrs Annie Younger was a benefactress of St Andrews, providing a graduation hall for the University (opened in 1929) and extensive donations for the building and renovation of All Saint's Episcopal Church and St Gregory's, North Street.

Gifted to the university in 1986.

There are references to the building of the Younger Hall, North Street, St Andrews to be found within the muniments collection of the University of St Andrews.
