Administrative / Biographical History

Wayland Hilton Young was educated at Stowe and Trinity College, Cambridge. He served in the Navy from 1942-1945 and entered the Foreign Office in 1946. He was Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Housing and Local Government 1966-1970, Opposition spokesman on foreign affairs and science policy 1971-1974, a Member of the European Parliament 1978-1979, and SDP spokesman in the House of Lords on foreign affairs and defence 1981-1990. He has published many books and pamphlets on subjects including defence, disarmament, the environment, and architecture.
