Administrative / Biographical History
Edward Newton (1832-1897) was the younger brother of Alfred Newton, who was Professor of Zoology at the University of Cambridge. Edward was employed in Colonial Service, in Mauritius 1859-1877 and as Governor and Colonial Secretary of Jamaica, 1877-1883. Interested in ornithology, he collected mainly birds to present to his brother, including many rare species from Mauritius.

Manuscripts can be consulted on appointment only. The Museum of Zoology is open Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 17:00 pm. Access and reproduction is at the discretion of the Archivist.
