Scope and Content

Records of Peacock, Willson & Company relating to:

  • Operation (1792-1937): ledgers, balance sheets, letter books, banknote registers, salary book, list of customers;
  • Amalgamation (1869-1937): declarations of partnership changes, amalgamation agreement, schedule of deeds, letters to customers, correspondence relating to banknote issue;
  • General (1780-1950): papers of Peacock, Willson and Handley families including genealogical notes, wills, and title deeds.

Administrative / Biographical History

The private bank of Peacock, Handley & Kirton was established in 1792, in Sleaford. Following partnership changes it was called Handley, Peacock & Handley from 1827, Handley, Peacock, Handley & Peacock from 1841, Peacock, Handley & Company from 1858 and Peacock, Willson & Company from 1861. It was also know as the Sleaford Bank and the Newark & Sleaford Bank. Branches were opened in Newark (1809), Bourne (1810) and Lincoln (1895). Sub-branches were opened in Heckington and Billinghay. The bank was acquired by Lloyds Bank in 1912.
