Administrative / Biographical History

Foundation

This joint stock-bank was established in 1861 and opened for business at the beginning of 1862.

Expansion

Under the direction of Joseph Beattie, the company quickly emerged as a leading Birmingham bank and strong local rival to Lloyds. Three branches were established in Birmingham at Temple Row (1861), New Street (1865) and Great Hampton Street (1874). The New Street branch was formerly the premises of Attwood, Spooner & Co. (est. 1791), which Birmingham Joint-Stock Bank took over in 1865.

Takeover

In 1889, the business was acquired by Lloyds, Barnetts & Bosanquets Bank Ltd (which became Lloyds Bank the same year).
