Levison Papers

The papers consist primarily of correspondence, two unpublished lectures, notes, book reviews, and material relating to the history of Levison's family, and the family of his wife, Elsa Freundlich.

From 1899 until 1920 Wilhelm Levison was on the staff of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica. From 1903 he taught at the University of Bonn, from 1920 to 1935 as Ordinarius für mittelalterliche und neuere Geshichte und geschichtliche Hilfswissenschaften. In 1938 Levison, who wasJewish and who had received an honorary Durham D. Litt. in 1931, was offered an Honorary Fellowship by the University of Durham. He moved from Bonn to Durham in 1939, and lived and worked there until his death.

Received with Professor Levison's library, which he left to the University of Durham, with the proviso that the University of Bonn might claim from it works lost from certain Bonn libraries as the result of war damage.
