The Georgina Green Collection

Scope and Content

This collection contains ballet ephemera including several annual reports from the Royal Opera House and the periodical About the House, 1957-95; Covent Garden Books issues 13-15; also programmes for The Bolshoi Ballet at the Royal Festival Hall in London, August 1965, and for Western Theatre Ballet in 1967.

Press cuttings on Fonteyn and Nureyev, 1990-91; scrapbooks [taken apart] containing newspaper cuttings, programmes, photographs and correspondence, mainly about Fonteyn and Nureyev in the première of MacMillan’s ‘Romeo and Juliet (1965); also of the rising generation of Principals at The Royal Ballet between 1962-67, including many signed snapshots of dancers such as Dowell, Seymour, Gable, Parkinson, Nerina, Blair; notes of which ballet personalities Green collected autographs from, 1964-67.

Ballet shoes: signed pointe shoes which belonged to Carole Needham, dated 16th February 1966; a signed pair worn by Lynn Seymour as Juliet (undated); a single green-dyed shoe worn by Anthony Dowell as Oberon (undated).

Green also collected various London theatre programmes (between 1959-88), predominately featuring The Royal Ballet Company and School, London Festival Ballet, The Bolshoi Ballet, Ballet for All, Western Theatre Ballet and the Australian Ballet. She personalized the programmes, and stuck ticket stubs for that night's performance into almost every one. She also annotated them, i.e. recording who was dancing that night, if cast-changes were made; had many of them signed (e.g. by Anthony Dowell and Antoinette Sibley; also Ekaterina Maximova and Vladimir Vasiliev) and included other items such as cuttings from magazines (some signed by dancers such as Nadia Nerina), newspaper cuttings, and photographs of ballet celebrities such as Nureyev.
