Sir William Scott (1745-1836), later Lord Stowell, Judge, MP, was the fourth child and eldest son of William Scott, a coal-shipper of Newcastle-on-Tyne. He was a lawyer and a friend of Johnson. He was elected MP for Oxford University in 1801, and was raised to the Peerage as Lord Stowell, after the estate he purchased, in 1821. Sir William Grant was Attorney General of Canada, MP for Shaftesbury 1790-93, and later Master of the Rolls. He was awarded the degree of DCL on 14 June 1820. Of him Brougham said: 'In Parliament he is unquestionably to be classed with speakers of the first order. No speaker was so easily listened to; none so difficult to answer'. He is buried at Dawlish.
