Papers of Ann Williams relating to Mediterranean Studies

This collection consists of papers relating to Mediterranean Studies, late 20th century. Included are: papers relating to the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies; papers relating to the Society for Mediterranean Studies; papers relating to the founding of the Centre for Mediterranean Studies (University of Exeter) and the MA in Mediterranean Studies. Also included are student dissertations in the area of Mediterranean Studies, research notes of Williams into Mediterranean Studies, and a microfilm of Florentine tax returns (Florentine Catasto), 1527.

Ann Williams (1931- ), lecturer in Mediterranean Studies, was born on 22nd August, and was educated in London. She read for a Bachelor's degree in history at St. Anne's College, University of Oxford, where she went on to obtain a BLitt. In 1961, she took up the post of lecturer in history at the University of Aberdeen, where she remained until she came to the University of Exeter in 1988. The period at Aberdeen included two years spent in Malta, establishing the field of Mediterranean Studies. She remained at the University of Exeter until her retirement in 1996. She was Director of the Centre for Mediterranean Studies from 1991, which now forms a part of the Institute for Arab and Islamic Studies. She has also been heavily involved in the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies (est. 1973) and the Society for Mediterranean Studies.

Her principal area of specialisation is the Knights of St. John in Malta. Her main publications are as follows: The Crusades (1975), Britain and France in the Middle East and North Africa 1914-1967 (1968) and Prophecy and millenariarnism: Essays in honour of Marjorie Reeves (1980).

Transcripts of Maltese parish registers which were created during one of Williams' research projects are now held in Malta and at the Sorbonne University, Paris.

It is not known whether this collection has been used as the basis for publication.
