Administrative / Biographical History

The Dundee, Perth & London Shipping Co Ltd, incorporated on the 3 July 1826, was a fusion of the Dundee & Perth Shipping Company, established in 1798 and the Dundee & Perth Union Shipping Company established in 1819. The Dundee & Perth Shipping Co ran vessels from Dundee to London, Glasgow and Liverpool in addition to lighters between Dundee and Perth. The Union Shipping Co ran vessels from Dundee to London, Glasgow and Leith and lighters from Dundee to Perth.

In 1917 the Dundee, Perth & London Shipping Co took over the Dundee and Newcastle Company, and in 1918 the Kirkcaldy Steamship Co. They later purchased the Leith-Dundee-Southampton-Treport service from Mr Thomas Cowan of Leith, and in 1929 the Aberdeen, Newcastle and Hull Steam Company was acquired. Until the outbreak of war in 1939 the company's London Traders carried passengers as well as cargo. London cargo services switched to rail in 1961. In 1971 the company became involved in North Sea Oil when the first British Petroleum oil rig supply ship berthed at Queen Elizabeth wharf, and in 1973 an agreement was reached with Thiess-Petrosea International to operate an oil rig supply base from the western section of the Eastern Wharf.
