Scope and Content

Material relating to Imrie's time as a medical student at University College Dundee 1932-1977, including certificates 1932-1937, photographs and ephemera 1935-1977. Material relating to Imrie's time in the Officer Training Corps and infantry 1933-1936.

Administrative / Biographical History

John Robinson Imrie was born in Wormit on Tay in 1914, attending secondary school at Harris Academy. He resided at Hawkhill Place while he studied medicine at University College Dundee, which his brother had also attended and qualified from. Graduating in 1937, he worked as an S.H.O. (Senior House Officer) at Harrogate Hospital, moving on to work as a ships surgeon. Returning from this post, he worked at Torbay Hospital before joining the R.A.M.C. (Royal Army Medial Corps). In this post he served in India and the Middle East, reaching the rank of Major. After the war, he joined with Dr. Venn-Dunn in General Practice in Torquay, now the medical centre at St. Marys. He was also clinical assistant in the Geriatric department at Paignton Hospital, and Newton Abbot Hospital. He was involved in founding Lily Derry Day Hospital at Torbay, and was medical officer to both the Post Office and the Territorial Army.

Material relating to Imrie's time as a Scout is held by the local Scouts Association. The Maritime Museum in Liverpool holds letters from Imrie to his mother while he was at sea.
