Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
In 1870 Bishop Forbes founded the Community of SS Mary and Modwenna, a Convent based in King Street, Dundee. The Sisterhood provided parochial and nursing work among the poor of five parishes in the city. They also looked after orphans and founded a home for Incurables, which later became St Margaret's Home. By the time of the death of the Mother Foundress in 1900, only Lay Sisters remained, and the Community of St Margaret, Aberdeen took charge of the convent in 1901.
In 1965 it briefly closed, being reopened by Sisters from the Community of St Peter in 1967. In 1971 the Convent moved to Adelaide Place, and in 1972 the Bishop of Brechin reconstituted the Sisterhood of SS Mary and Modwenna. The Sisterhood continued their work in two parishes, provided day retreats and study groups, and produced church embroidery. The convent closed in 1988.
