Records of the Bon Accord Society in Aberdeen

Scope and Content

Bon Accord Society Register, 1778 - 1810.

The register lists names and occupations of members, recording deaths and exclusions from the Society. Enclosures include printed Rules and list of members, 1794; abstract of Bon Accord Society houses for 1798/9; motion for the reinstatement of Members disqualified by payment of Quartermonies exceeding half a crown at one payment, 27 June 1800 .

Administrative / Biographical History

The Bon Accord Society in Aberdeen was founded in 1778 by eight trades-men working in the city - Alexander Watson, tailor and burgess; George Allan, tailor and burgess; James Pirie, wig-maker; Alexander Strachan, tailor; William Wilson, merchant; Alexander Brown, wheelwright; John Christie and James Gillet. It was established for the mutual benefit of themselves, their Widows or Children, and for like benefit to all other persons, who should afterwards become Members of said society . (GB 231 MS 48/ 2). Membership was granted to sons and sons-in-law of existing members upon payment of a moderate entry fee. Other men between the ages of eighteen and forty-two of good moral character, and in a good state of health, not subject to any hereditary or incurable disorder could apply for membership after election by two existing members and upon payment of an increased fee (GB 231 AU MS 48/ 2).
