Scope and Content

Autograph manuscript of John Stuart Mill of a tour in Sussex in 1827.

A tour in the company of [George John] Graham and Grant, including Chichister, Arundel, Lewes, Seaford, Eastbourne, Battle Abbey, Knole and Hastings. The journal, in addition to topographical information, includes botanical details of 42 species of plant observed. A list of expenses incurred is included on the final folio.

Custodial History

Formerly in the hands of Mr W H Graham, grandson of one of the tour party. Prior to 1920 it was sold to a London bookseller, James Tregaskis, who in turn sold it on to W H B Fletcher of Bognor Regis [19 July 1920] from whence it passed to Holeyman and Treacher, booksellers of Brighton, whose catalogue is enclosed in the original.
