Papers of Stirling family of Cadder

The papers include correspondence.

This branch of the family was in existence in the thirteenth century and the property is known to have passed to the Stirlings of Keir in the sixteenth century, subsequent to the marriage of the daughter and heiress of Andrew Stirling of Cadder who died in 1522 to James Stirling, eldest son of Sir John Stirling of Keir. Despite the marriage being unlawful due to consanguinuity, the heiress was persuaded to resign her estate to James Stirling in 1541. Janet then married Thomas Bischop who became in 1544 Private Secretary to the Regent, the Earl of Lennox. A notable later member of the family was Admiral Sir James Stirling, fifth son of Andrew Stirling of Drumpelier (1791-1856), founder of the city of Perth, and first governor of Western Australia.

The papers remain as arranged by Thomas Willing Stirling.
