Papers of George Walter Young

This small collection comprises 80 items of incoming correspondence andone copy outgoing letter.

Born probably in 1853, a graduate of Queen's College Oxford, George Walter Young earned his living as a private tutor. Attracted to Roman Catholicism he was counselled to caution by von Hgel and does not seem to have taken this step but remained a sympathetic, and often an active, supporter of the modernists in the pre-war years which are covered by this correspondence, at which time he lived in Beaumont Street, Oxford. He later moved to Holywell Street but little is known of these latter years of his life. He died in 1932.

These papers form part of the collection of Roman Catholic Modernist papers held by the University. Correspondence between Frank Walter Young and Von Hgel for example, might appear as part of the descriptions of the papers of both individuals.
