Scope and Content

The collection consists of the following papers :

Copies in the hand of Thomas Roberts of the works of such poets as Lewis Glyn Cothi, Guto'r Glyn, Lewis Mon, Tudur Aled, Dafydd Nanmor, Tudur Penllyn and numerous other belonging to the 15th century.

Drafts etc. of some of the published works of Thomas Roberts. The subjects covered include Gutun Owain, Tudur Penllyn, Ieuan ap Tudur Penllyn, Guto'r Glyn, Dafydd ab Edmwnd.

Notes on the authorship of poems, pedigrees, historical references etc.

Lectures on such subjects as the Welsh language, Welsh literature, Welsh and English in primary schools etc.

Plays being translations by Thomas Roberts.

A collection of papers on bilingual education.

A collection of notes on the history of the Normal College, Bangor, 1958.

Lecture notes for a course on Welsh literature.

Photostat copies of poetry manuscripts from the National Library of Wales, the British Museum and the Bodleian Library.

Original manuscript described as Llandudno MS. It consists of a collection of cywyddau in two hands - one from the end of the 18th century, the other from the beginning of the 19th century. Amongst the various 16th century bards are, Humphrey Dafydd ab Ifan, Humphrey William, Thomas Prys, Edmund Prys, Sion Phylip.

Administrative / Biographical History

Thomas Roberts of Bangor was a scholar and head of the Welsh Department of the Normal College, Bangor. He was also Vice-Principal of the College from 1920 until his retirement in 1949. His main field of research was the work of the bards of the early modern period, and for many years he collected manuscripts and copied manuscripts at the National Library of Wales, the British Library and other repositories. In 1914 he edited Gwaith Dafydd ab Edmwnd and later in 1958 edited Gwaith Tudur Penllyn ac Ieuan ap Tudur Penllyn. He was also co-editor of Cywyddau Dafydd ap Gwilym a'i Gyfoeswyr alongside Sir Ifor Williams in 1935 and Cywyddau Iolo Goch ac Eraill in 1925 and 1937 with Sir Ifor Williams and Henry Lewis.

Arrangement

The collection has been incorporated into the General Collection of Bangor Manuscripts. The papers have been grouped into 12 sections according to type.
