John Ruskin (1819-1900), the eminent Victorian was an author, artist, social reformer and scientist. Lewis Hartley lived at 8 Booth Street, Piccadilly, Manchester and later at Bangor in north Wales. He was the author of Industrial thrift in relation to the post office savings banks, a paper he presented to the Menai Society of Natural Science and Literature, February 10th, 1887. During 1863 the men corresponded on the subject of economics, business and social reform
