Administrative / Biographical History

Idris Llewelyn Foster was born in Bethesda, Caernarfonshire in 1911 and educated at the University College of North Wales and later at Dublin and Bonn. He was appointed Professor of Celtic at Jesus College Oxford in 1947 where he stayed until his retirement in 1978. He was one of the leading Celtic scholars of his day and his papers are held at the National Library of Wales.
