Letters of David Hugh Jones

This collection comprises David Hugh Jones' letters, mainly written to those in positions of authority and influence in Llanuwchllyn, including justices of the peace. Letters relate to complaints of ill treatment he claimed to receive from his Llanuwchllyn neighbours and compensation requests, and complaints against the police, which he alleged, made malicious statements about him. Also contains a request to J. Jones Edwards of Bronwylfa, Llanuwchllyn, for financial assistance to pay for a preparatory course before entering university.

David Hugh Jones of Prysau Bychain, Llanuwchllyn in Merioneth earned his living as a peddler. He was hoping to attend university, ca. 1935, but it is not known if he achieved this. Judging by the letters in this collection, he was an articulate and gifted writer with a slightly eccentric personality. It seems he had a troubled relationship with some of his neighbours at Llanuwchllyn, whom he accused of relentlessly continuous and mentally destructive persecutions.

Material is arranged in chronological order and incorporated into the General Collection of Bangor Manuscripts .
