Scope and Content

A transcript in pencil of the Berne Manuscript of Historia Regum Britanniae by Geoffrey of Monmouth.

J. E. Lloyd's copy of Galfredi Monumetensis Historia Britonum edited by J.A. Giles, 1844 together with manuscript additions by G.B. Mathews of variants and additions in the Berne Ms. The volume also contains valuable notes by Dr Lloyd himself.

Administrative / Biographical History

Professor G. B. Mathews went on holiday in 1898 to Switzerland. During his stay he transcribed part of the Berne Manuscript for Professor W. Lewis Jones which contained the Historia Regum Britanniae. Professor Jones of the English Department of the University College of North Wales was at the time engaged in research on the place of the work of Geoffrey of Monmouth in the development of the Arthurian legend.

Historia Regum Britanniae by Geoffrey of Monmouth traces the history of the kings of Britain down to Cadwaladr Fendigaid.

Transcript was received by the Library in 1928 whilst the printed volume was presented by Dr J. E. Lloyd in 1932.
