Benjamin Humphreys Collection

Note-book consisting of the history of the Quarterly Meetings of the Baptists in various churches in South-West Wales, ranging from Carmarthen to Swansea, 1794-1846. Some sections are extracts copied from Seren Gomer, 1906.

A bound collection of papers - mostly correspondence, 1825 - 1934. Amongst the correspondents are, Simon James of Tal-y-bont, Dr David Adams, and other eminent Baptists.

Rev. Benjamin Humphreys of Felin-foel, Llanelli, Carmarthenshire was born in Tal-y-bont, Cardiganshire. He attended the Baptist College in Llangollen and served as a minister in Manchester before joining one of the largest churches in Wales, namely Felin-foel in Carmarthenshire.

Benjamin Humphreys was also a historian and took great delight in collecting old books and manuscripts. He is the author of a history of the Baptists of Felin-foel, Cyfrol goffa, dau can mlwyddiant, 1709-1909 : hanes Bedyddwyr Felinfoel, 1909. He died in 1934.

John Jones, whose note-book is to be found amongst this collection, was a Baptist minister at Capel Sion, Merthyr. He was born in 1806 and died in 1859.
