Salvation Army personal papers collections: Lt-Colonel Leonard Woodward

These are the personal papers of Lt-Colonel Leonard Havergal Woodward.

The collection comprises diaries (photocopies) written by Lt Colonel Woodward whilst serving in the Dutch East Indies and the UK. They cover the years 1926-1927; 1939-1940; 1943-1946 and 1948-1950. It is not known when the photocopies were compiled but the collection includes autographs and notes dated 1963.

The records are arranged in nine files corresponding to each diary:

Lt-Colonel Leonard Woodward and his wife Maggie (nee Lowe) spent 33 years of their Salvation Army officership serving in Java and Sulawesi (Celebes) in the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia). During 1942-1945 the Woodwards were interned with other Salvation Army officers in Makassar, a Japanese camp for prisoners of war. They returned to the UK in 1949.
