      1 vol. (189 ff.) Modern pencil foliation. Ff.20-21, 46-48, 50-51, 53-188 are blank. Bound in rough calf with ribbon ties and some blind tooling. Lettered: LEASES. The signature "Heneage Dering" is on the front pastedown.

Scope and Content

Contains: (1) ff.1-2r: Names of the six sisters in Magdalen Hospital 1710, with changes up to 1743-4; and of the two sisters in St John's Hospital (with changes up to 1747); (2) f.2v: Rents of Maudlin Hospital and St Jo. Baptist Hospital; (3) ff.3-4: The last will and testament of Mr William Spink relating to the Hospital of St Mary Magdalene (with a memorandum added in 1818); (4) ff.5-11: Magdalen Hospital rents, details of nine leases, with notes of renewals; (5) f.12v: Papal decree concerning "Domus leprosorum St Mariae Magdalene de Riponia" (in Latin); (6) f.13r: "Veredictum Juratorum supra stata Hospitalis de Ripon anno decimo Regis Edvardi Secundi, (1317)" (in Latin); (7) ff.13v-19: St John Baptist Hospital rents, details of 8 leases, with notes on renewals; (8) ff.22-52: Details of 35 leases of property belonging to the church; (9) f.189v: Notes in the hand of Dean Dering. On f.19r there is a note signed by Dean Waddilove, dated 12 March, 1827, that the remainder of the volume appears to relate only to the concerns of the Dean and Chapter, and is their property, although Dean Dering had marked the volume as his own. Inserted in the manuscript are miscellaneous notes, probably from the 20th century, concerning various legal judgments and historical matters relating chiefly to Ripon.
