Records of York Friends Temperance Association

Minutes, 1875-1880 (1 vol.) [G 17]; including reports of annual meetings and membership list

A circular sent out in November 1874 to members of York Preparative Meeting resulted in the creation of a Friends Temperance Association in the city. It began with 120 members and by 1880, had 200 Friends on its books. Its first secretary was Fielden Thorp. The association held annual public meetings and several of its members ran Bands of Hope for the children of Friends. It was still active in 1880.

The records are numbered and arranged according to the system used when they were in Clifford Street Meeting House

The conditions of deposit include a clause requiring written prior permission from a Friend Custodian for access to consult current legal documents and any material less than fifty years old
