Administrative / Biographical History
Benjamin Preston, the Yorkshire dialect poet, was born in Bradford in August 1819, the son of a handloom weaver. Soon after his birth, the family moved about a mile and a half from Bradford, to Waterside Farm in the Thornton valley, where Preston spent his childhood in the countryside. Although he moved back to Bradford later, he eventually had a house built at Gilstead Moor in 1865 and soon after built Hammondale House at Eldwick Beck, where he was living at the time of his death in 1902. His poems and other writings were published in the periodical press, but in 1872, his neighbour, Abraham Holroyd of Saltaire published a collection of his work
