| Reference Number(s) | GB 1840 DWJ/01/01 |
| Dates of Creation | nd [c 1940-1941] |
| Physical Description | 1 item |
Scope and Content
School exercise book used by Diana Wynne Jones when she was a child. The exercise book contains coloured drawings of plants and flowers, with brief pencil text describing the characteristics of the plants. The exercise book appears to have been used by Jones when she was living in the Lake District [summer 1940-September 1941], as one page lists 'flowers in Coniston'. The book also contains two childish paintings; one page of what appear to be scores in some sort of game, for 'Ursula' [Jones' sister], 'Robert' and 'Diana'; and what appears to be an attempt at a story entitled 'The Song of the Mountain Ash Fairy', which breaks off after only two words.
The covers are missing from the exercise book, and several pages have been torn out of the back of the exercise book.

'Private Literary Convulsions' exercise books
| This material is held at | Seven Stories, the Centre for Children's Books |
| Reference Number(s) | GB 1840 DWJ/01/02 |
| Dates of Creation | c 1949-1950 |
| Physical Description | 2 items |
Scope and Content
Two school exercise books used by Diana Wynne Jones when she was a child. The first exercise book is labelled on the front cover in pencil 'Private Literary Convulsions', and the second is labelled 'Private Literary Convulsions contd.'. The cover of the first exercise book also bears the note 'Essays (etc) by me Diana Jones. PRIVATE'.
The first exercise book contains several short essays and biographical sketches entitled 'The Church', 'On Essays Generally', 'The Song of the Adolescent' and 'The Fascination of Water'. It also contains several poems and limericks, and the first act of a play entitled 'Two Shades of Grey'. This play, which features characters called 'Jo' (Jehovah) and 'Loo' (Lucifer) debating the future of humanity, continues in the second exercise book. The second exercise book also contains an essay entitled 'Juvenile Difficulties', which describes Jones' desire to be a writer and the difficulties she foresees in actually becoming a writer.
All of the pieces of writing in both exercise books have numbers recorded next to the titles, either '14' or '15', which is assumed to be Jones' age at the time of writing. A few of the poems are also dated, all written in 1950.

| Physical Description | 2 items; 93 ff. |
Scope and Content
Incomplete typescript draft of 'Howl's Moving Castle' by Diana Wynne Jones. The typescript is heavily annotated, and numerous pages are missing throughout. The typescript was stored in a paper folder labelled in Jones' hand 'Howl minus by Miriam' - this draft was sent to Laura Cecil, Jones' agent.
Laura Cecil provided the following explanatory note at the time of deposit: "This was a joke version of an edited HOWL sent to Laura Cecil by an exasperated DWJ, showing in a reductio ad absurdum version what would happen if she followed Miriam Hodgsons editorial comments to the letter. Neither Miriam nor anyone else at Methuen knew about this version. It was part of Dianas way of letting off steam when she was having to fight her corner with publishers. Later on she and Miriam had a very good relationship, but it took some time for her to understand Dianas work."

Scope and Content
Complete manuscript draft of 'Charmed Life' by Diana Wynne Jones. The manuscript is substantially the same as the published book in terms of plot and characterisation, although there are some differences in the structure and ordering of some passages. The title 'Enchanter's Magic' appears at the top of the first page, and appears to have been an early title for the book. Another title, 'The Spell She Left Behind Her', also appears on the first page, but has been crossed out. The file also includes a sheet of several alternative titles, all of which appear to have been considered for 'Charmed Life'.
