Raymond Richards Collection: Lord North Papers

Scope and Content

An accumulation of 136 items relating to Lord North and Guilford, later 1st Earl of Guilford. Included are papers from the period when Lord North was acting as executor of William Moore (d. 1746) of Polesden, Surrey and as trustee for Miss Ann Jekyll. The collection also includes Royal Household Account Rolls, 1696-1819; miscellaneous items relating to government, 1660-1812; local government elections, appointments, nominations, 1682-1744; family papers and deeds of the Bunbury family, 1746-1845, Wyche family, 1665-1725, Watts family, 1628-1654, Single family, 1704-1784; deeds of Hockwold cum Wilton, 1369-1681; Norfolk, 1637-1797; miscellaneous deeds, 1564-1802.

The papers relating to William Moore and family include property deeds, 1690-1738; business and estates correspondence, 1663-1746; correspondence of Moore, 1745; drafts of Moore's will; papers of the executors,1746-1767.

Administrative / Biographical History

Francis North, 1704-1790, first earl of Guilford, grandson of Francis North, first Baron Guilford. MP Banbury 1727; succeeded his father as third Baron, 1729, and his kinsman William North, Baron North and Grey, as seventh Baron North of Kirtling, 1734; held court appointments; created earl of Guilford, 1753; treasurer to Queen Charlotte, 1773.

Acquisition Information

This collection was purchased in 1957 from Mr. Raymond Richards of Birkdale and later of Gawsworth Hall, Cheshire. The collection, which had been deposited at the John Rylands Library, Manchester, was amassed over a number of years from many different sources and is heterogeneous in character.
