Scope and Content

Papers of Falconer Madan relating to manuscripts of Vergil. The papers include a collation by Madan, 1877, of selected lines in forty-one Bodleian manuscripts of Vergil, on the text of Otto Ribbeck's first edition of the works (Leipzig, 1859-62). There are also notes and articles by Madan on Vergil manuscripts, mainly in the Bodleian, including a section on the Old High German glosses in MS. Auct. F.1.16 (SC 8856), with a few from other libraries, 1876-80.

Administrative / Biographical History

Falconer Madan (1851-1935) was Bodley's Librarian, a palaeographer and bibliographer. Details are given in Who Was Who.
