Scope and Content

The papers of Samuel Weller Singer mainly relating to the compilation of a dictionary of Old and Middle English, which, according to the Dictionary of National Biography, was abandoned because of Joseph Bosworth's rival Anglo-Saxon Dictionary [1838]. Some of the slip indexes for the dictionary are written on the reverse of torn scraps of Singer's official correspondence of the 1830s as Hon. Secretary of the Travellers' Club.
