Scope and Content

The Callcott papers consist of:

  • Papers of Sir Augustus Wall Callcott, including journals and commonplace books, notes on family history, notes on painting theory, techniques and art history, and miscellaneous material
  • Papers of Maria, Lady Callcott, including journals and commonplace books, memoirs, manuscripts of her own works and miscellaneous material
  • Papers of other members of the family

Administrative / Biographical History

Sir Augustus Wall Callcott (1779-1884) was a landscape painter. Maria, Lady Callcott (1785-1842) was an author and traveller. Details are given in the Dictionary of National Biography.

Acquisition Information

The papers were transferred to the Library from the Ashmolean Museum in 1987, and from University College, London, in 1989.
