Papers of Sir John Crampton

Correspondence and papers of Crampton mainly relating to: the United States of America and Anglo-American affairs (including trade between Canada and America, navigation laws, fisheries, copyright, and the recruitment of American citizens for the British army in the Crimea), 1848-56; Russia, 1858-61, and Spain, 1861, 1868; with some personal papers. There is no correspondence for the years 1846-7, and very little apart from bills for the years 1869-86, but there is a register containing abstracts of Crampton's 'private' letters to and from the Foreign Office, 1852-68. Also includes a portrait of Crampton as a young man.

Sir John Crampton (1805-86) of Bushey Park, Enniskerry, co. Wicklow was a diplomat. Details are given in the Dictionary of National Biography.
