Papers of Dr Walter Spitzer

Papers relating to the medical career of Dr Walter Spitzer, including his bound MRCOG case book, signed by J V O'Sullivan FRCOG, a copy of his curriculum vitae outlining his medical career in Czechoslovakia (1929-1938) and in England following his arrival with the assistance of the Czechoslovak Refugee Trust Fund (1939), draft correspondence and supporting papers with the RCOG relating to his attempts to apply for the MRCOG, made difficult by his immigration status, and photocopies of photographs of him as a consultant. A duplicate typed copy of an obstetrical commentary included in the case book, 'Eclampsia and cerebral complications', is included in the file of loose papers. An additional file of photocopies is included in the collection, comprising photographs of family members and Czech maternity units, a register of gynaecological operations (1933-1935) performed by Professor Herman Knaus in Prague together with articles by Professor Knaus and a photograph, and certificates of Dr Spitzer's medical studies in Prague; with reprints of articles by Dr Spitzer in Czech and English (1931-1946).

Walter Spitzer was a Czech obstetrician and gynaecologist who came to England at the outbreak of the Second World War under a refugee scheme. He subsequently found a position at Kingston Hospital, but his application for Membership of the RCOG was unsuccessful due to requirements of training in the UK.
