Scope and Content

Volume of papers of Robert Hall (1764-1831), including: correspondence from Hall to Dr. John Ryland and one letter from Robert Hall senior; a double page of notes on the translation of the New Testament; a [funeral] sermon preached by Hall for Dr. Ryland.

Administrative / Biographical History

Robert Hall was born 2 May 1764. His father, Robert Hall senior, was pastor of a Baptist church at Arnesby, Leicestershire and published Help to Zion's Travellers . Hall spent 3 years at the Baptist Academy in Bristol. He then attended Aberdeen University but later returned to Bristol. There he became tutor at the Academy and assistant minister at Broadmead Chapel. He later became pastor of what is now St. Andrew's Street Baptist Church, Cambridge. In 1807, he moved to Harvey Lane, Leicester and married Mary [ne ?], a maid-servant. He returned to Broadmead circa 1827 and died 21 February, 1831.

Correspondence is arranged mainly in chronological order and includes the pages of notes and sermon.

Custodial History

Following the merger of the Selly Oak Colleges and the University of Birmingham in 1999 the custodial ownership of collections belonging to the Selly Oak Colleges and held at the Orchard Learning and Resource Centre (OLRC) was transferred to the University. These collections now form part of the University's Special Collections Department and are available for consultation at the Main Library on the University's Edgbaston Campus.
