The collection contains:

Series of correspondence covering her time training as a nurse at the General Hospital including correspondence from Matron Liddle, references, and newspaper cuttings relating to a reunion of nurses from the General Hospital; 1920-1930s (MS 856/C/1-9)

Administrative / Biographical History

Ellen May Wallis was born in 1898. She trained as a nurse at Nottingham General Hospital from 1922-1926. She was encouraged by Miss Liddle, matron at Nottingham General Hospital, to take her Housekeeping training which she undertook at the Royal Berkshire from May to September 1933. She served at the Samaritans Womens Hospital, Stoke Mandeville, the Fever Hospital, Tunbridge Wells, Chichester Hospital and Exminster Hospital amongst others. She was Matron at Lockyer Street Hospital, Plymouth from 1944 until her death in 1954.
