Records of the Dyfed County Council 1901-1996, material relating to education, 1977-1982; Chief Executives Papers, 1975-1989; maps, 1956-1987; records of the Surveyor's Department, 1979-1996; records of the Industrial Development Unit, 1972-1983; records of the County Information Officer, 1975-1992; records relating to the Estates Department, 1956-1983; records relating to the Pembrokeshire National Park, 1970-1984; records of the Planning Department, 1976-1983; Social Services records, 1901-1984; and records from Treasurers Department, 1977-1995.

Dyfed was the former county of southwest Wales, created in 1974, covering the earlier counties of Carmarthenshire, Cardiganshire and Pembrokeshire. The County Council inherited some records and documents from its predecessor bodies, and printed material, including Acts of Parliament relating to the area. In 1996 it was abolished, and the area was divided between the unitary authorities of Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, and Pembrokeshire. Some later material has been added to series in the Dyfed County Council collection post-dating its abolition. The County Council was reponsible for education, an Industrial Development Unit, promoting oil and gas prospection in the 1970s, Estates Department; Information Officer; Pembrokeshire National Park; and Social Services (covering some functions derived from the Local Government Act 1929, initially exercised through the Public Assistance Committee until the National Assistance Act 1948 left the local authority with responsibility only for children and the elderly), including Sunnybank/Allensbank centre, Narberth.

Restricted access. Letter books transferred by the Area Education Officer, County Offices, Haverfordwest, are not open to public inspection without the permission of the Education Department. Some of the Social Services records contain medical and other personal information and are therefore unavailable for public inspection for 100 years from date of final entry.

Parts transferred in November 1982; part deposited by the Chief Civil Protection Planning Officer, Civil Protection Planning Unit, Carmarthen in June 1991 and transferred from Modern Records in 1999.

All records have been retained

Records of Poor Law Unions and the Public Assistance Committee were transferred to the Welfare, Children's and Health Committees of Pemborkeshire County Council and thence to Dyfed County Council. Upon the abolition of Dyfed County Council, some of its records were transferred to its successor bodies.
