Scope and Content

The volume has the title 'A Collection of Shells from Port Alfred, South Africa' and is dated 1934. There are 34 numbered pages, with list of species, and reference to a report. The catalogue accompanied a collection of specimens donated at the same time to the Museum of Zoology.

Administrative / Biographical History

William Harry Turton (1856-1938) was born in India and educated at Clifton College and the Royal Military Academy in England. In 1876 he was commissioned as a Royal Engineer Lieutenant. He wrote two books of hymns, and published a book on 'The Marine Shells of Port Alfred' in 1932.

Manuscripts can be consulted on appointment only. The Museum of Zoology is open Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 17:00 pm. Access and reproduction is at the discretion of the Archivist.
