Administrative / Biographical History

The club was begun in 1901 when a group of individuals in Dinas Powys obtained consent from a local landowner to lay down three tennis courts on the site of the present bowling club. A meeting in April 1902 approved the establishment of the Dinas Powis Club House Co Ltd to hold the club site on a yearly basis and to issue shares to all club members. A further three courts were constructed in 1905-6 and the earlier courts given over to bowls. In recognition of this, the club changed its name to the Dinas Powis Lawn Tennis and Bowling Club in 1907, and held a joint Whitsun Tournament from 1908. The club purchased the site in 1912 and placed ownership with the limited company. A minor dispute over the maintenance of the grounds in 1922 led to a split between the bowls and tennis interests in the club and the tennis club was re-established as a distinct unit. The company remained responsible for both the new bowls and the tennis clubs, but the tennis club was obliged to construct its own pavilion in 1922-1923. The gradual expansion of the club's provision for members coupled with the Whitsun Tournament (established as the Glamorganshire Championships Tournament in 1911) led to the club's widespread and popular recognition as a major sports organization but financial pressures led to the abolition of the Whitsun Tournament in 1964. The last Tournament in Glamorgan was held at Cardiff Lawn Tennis Club in 1969.
