Blank letter headed papers, forms, envelopes and notes of Cumbrian Co-operative Society and the societies that merged into it.

Administrative / Biographical History

Cumbrian Co-operative Society was formed in 1971 through the merger of several smaller co-operative societies including Workington, Egremont, Haltwhistle Greenhead, Maryport, Alston and Carlisle South End. In the years that followed several other societies transferred engagements including Nenthead in 1973, Kirkby Stephen in 1982, Ulverston in 1983 and Barrow in 1984. In 1992 Cumbrian Co-operative Society became a retail branch of the Co-operative Wholesale Society.

Acquisition Information

Transferred to the National Co-operative Archive from the Co-operative Union Library in 2000. The collection had been part of the Co-operative Union's Miscellaneous collection.

Appraisal Information

Rules of Maryport Co-operative Industrial Society were transferred to the Co-operative Society Rule Book collection held at the National Co-operative Archive.

Custodial History

There is a letter with the collection from Peggy to Mr Berry, dated 29th April 1980. Peggy explains that the items were given to her by John and as they were left at reception, she assumes they must be for his (Mr Berry) collection. At some point after, the items were passed onto the Co-operative Union Library by Mr Berry.
