This material is held atNational Portrait Gallery Archive

Scope and Content

The Portrait Gala Committee was established in 2008, its purpose being to plan for the gala event held at the Gallery in 2009. Full Gala Committee meetings were attended by members of Gallery staff including the Director, Director of Communications and Development & Deputy Director, Gala Manager, Major Donor Development Manager, Events Manager, and Corporate Development Manager, and by external individuals composed of people from the worlds of art, entertainment and business (many of whom were long-standing Gallery supporters or sponsors).

The Full Gala Committee met twice and the Executive Committee met four times. All meetings were minuted.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Portrait Gala was a fundraising evening: potential guests were invited to purchase a table or individual ticket to a reception and dinner with entertainments, and to participate in different fundraising activities including a live auction and the Mystery Portrait Postcards. The cost of the event was sponsored by various companies and Gallery supporters, and the money raised was used for the Gallery's Education programme. It was the second gala organised by the Gallery - the first being held in 2006 to celebrate the Gallery's 150th Anniversary.

A dozen external committee members were also part of a smaller group, the Executive Committee, who played a more active role in the planning of the event. The Executive Committee met separately and more frequently with the above-detailed Gallery staff.
