Administrative / Biographical History

The Military Education Committee of University College Nottingham was formed some time before 1924 to co-ordinate and supervise the military activities of its students. Most prominent among them was the Officers' Training Corps, established in 1909. The University College Womens' Army Corps and The University of Nottingham Air Squadron both fell under the umbrella of the committee in later years. The committee comprised representatives of these societies but also included university officers, members of the armed forces, and others from the community (often retired military personnel). The Ministry of Defence and its predecessors had influence in the running of such committees via its university liaison officers and the Central Organisation of Military Education Committees (later the Council of Military Education Committees).

In 1967, the committee was renamed the East Midlands Universities Military Education Committee. This reflected the wider regional focus of the university's military corps. The committee also began to include representatives from the universities of Leicester and Loughborough. The East Midlands Universities Military Education Committee remains a committee of The University of Nottingham. In 2000 it was located within the university Senate's Student Affairs Committee.
