Scope and Content

A single volume of `Memoria apologetica y defensiva de la conducta politica del presvitero Don Diego Ximenez Valverde en el tiempo que los exercitos Franceces existieron en Espana'. Although described as `Volume 1', the work is probably complete. The apologia covers the period from 6 February 1810, when the French forces occupied the town of Chiclana de la Frontera in Andalusia, where Ximenez Valverde had his home, to 15 July 1813, when he went as a refugee into France. Written at Cadiz, starting 7 December 1814, by another priest, Don Pedro Fernandez Recio (d. ante Jan 1815); with an account of Ximenez Valverde's earlier career, merits and literary achievements. The text was probably written in response to the pamphlet LOS FAMOSOS TRAIDORES REFUGIADOS EN FRANCIA CONVENCIDOS DE SUS DELITOS ... (Madrid, c.1813).
