Administrative / Biographical History

William Rees was a solicitor based in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, during the first half of the 19th century. In 1850 Rees took his nephew, William Davies into partnership with him. Davies built up the practice under the titles Davies, George and Davies in Haverfordwest and Smith, Davies and Co. in London. However the firm of Davies, George and Davies became bankrupt in 1895. Williams and Williams acquired part of the practice but itself became bankrupt in the 1930s. This practice was succeeded by Phillips Williams and Co., the immediate predecessor to Penhale and Co., based in High Street, Haverfordwest. These solicitors had worked on behalf of many families in the area, including the Child family, which held Bonville's Court estate and colliery in St Issells, Pembrokeshire; Charles Allen Hughes (fl. 1884-1895) of Robeston Hall, Robeston West, Pembrokeshire, and later Hazel Hill, Llanstadwell, Pembrokeshire; John Davies (fl. 1869-1891), farmer, of Hayston, later Jordanston, Pembrokeshire; John Llewellyn, (alive 1888-1891), farmer, of Hazel Hill, Llanstadwell; Essex Harries (d. 1896) of Haverfordwest; John Madocks (fl. 1837-1877), corn merchant, of Haverfordwest; and Christopher Henry James Talmage (fl. 1918-1964), who owned property in Johnston, Pembrokeshire, including the Johnston Brick and Tile Co. Ltd.
