Manuscript book relating to property belonging to Jean Chappellier of Paris, 1597

The manuscript volume is covered in vellum, re-used from another document, and stitched together. The volume is described on its cover as 'Partage dee biens laissez par deffuncte honorable homme Jean Chappellier vinam marchand bourgeoise de Paris et Marguerite Thiaule sa femme...' This has been translated to mean 'Division of property left by the honourable Jean Chappellier, wine merchant, bourgeois, deceased and Marguerite his wife'.

The volume begins with the date 12 August 1597, which is repeated in another hand at the top of the first page. It goes on to detail properties and goods, some of which are given monetary values. Part way through the volume, it appears to refer to an auction of various lots. The name Nicolas Chappellier, Principal of the College de Sainte Barbe [in Paris] is often given, as is the name Catherine Chappellier. The volume is all written in the same hand, and is signed at the end [the name is illegible].

The contents of this volume comprise the only known archival remains of Jean Chappellier. He is stated in the volume to have been a wine merchant and citizen of Paris, married to Marguerite Thiaule. He is presumably the same Jean Chappellier, merchant and citizen of the rue au Feurre, Paris, who in 1597 confirmed an annuity or income out of a house on rue Saint-Denis in Paris to the Collegiate Church and Hospital of Saint-Sépulcre de Jérusalem.
