Scope and Content

Correspondence mainly concerning the dispute between the CSCA and W J Brown, Brown's statement about Hicks in the House of Commons, and Hicks's subsequent suspension from the Air Ministry and loss of the CSCA presidency.

Administrative / Biographical History

In March 1948, when Hicks was a higher clerical officer in the Air Ministry, W J Brown, the CSCA's parliamentary general secretary, identified him as a Communist during a House of Commons debate on air estimates. As a result, Hicks was suspended from his Air Ministry post and was later transferred to an equivalent post in the Ministry of Health. He also failed to be re-elected as president of the CSCA because his branch did not support him. He died in 1984 aged 83.
