Correspondence, deeds and legal papers from Messrs Dawson and Co, Lincoln's Inn and G.F. Hudson, Matthews and Co. primarily relating to Carlton upon Trent, Nottinghamshire; 1889-1967

There are four series of documents relating to land owned by the Vere-Laurie family at Carlton on Trent.

The first refers to a dispute with the Board of Education and the Vere-Laurie family over £200 consols which had been removed from the endowment of Carlton on Trent village school and had to be repaid, 1938 (MS 879/1).

A second series relates to the Carlton on Trent bypass and the purchase of land from the Vere-Laurie estate for the construction of the road by Nottinghamshire County Council in 1930 (MS 879/2).

Another series relates to the purchase of land at Carlton on Trent to permit the widening of the railway line, 1937-1938 (MS 879/3).

Further deeds relating to the Vere-Laurie family of Carlton on Trent including the lease of Carlton Hall, 1926, and documents relating to the dredging of the River Trent, 1931. Other documents relate to the inheritance of Captain G.H. Vere-Laurie (MS 879/4).

The collection also comprises two series of 'stray' deeds which, at present, cannot be linked to the main Vere-Laurie papers:

One series relates to the Foster family, formerly of Hornby Castle and contains a number of items relating to the inheritance of the estate of Arthur Wellesley Foster (MS 879/5).

A final series of complete stray deeds have no connection with either the Foster or the Vere-Laurie family and cover properties in Warwickshire, Kent, Cornwall and London (MS 879/6).

These papers relate to Mrs Clementia I.M. Skeffington-Craig (1843-1937) who married first Sydney William Foster-Skeffington and secondly Col James Craig. Her daughter Florence Clementina Vere Skeffington adopted the surname Vere-Laurie by deed poll in 1915. She married Lt-Col George Brenton Laurie in 1905, he was killed in action in France, 12 March, 1915. She later married her cousin, the 12th Viscount Massereene and 5th Viscount Ferrard. Her son George Halliburton Foster Peel Vere-Laurie inherited the Carlton on Trent estate upon her death.

The series of Foster family papers relate mainly to the Rev. Arthur Wellesley Foster (1855-1929), his son Cuthbert Wellesley Foster (1887-1952) and his cousins John Kenneth Foster (1866-1930) and Robert Lionel Foster (1870-1952).

The collection has been arranged in six series according to property. Within these series the papers are arranged chronologically.
