Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Scottish Machine Tool Corporation Ltd was formed in 1937 through the merger of five long established machine tool manufacturers who all specialised in supplying the shipbuilding and heavy engineering industries. These companies, namely James Allan Senior & Sons Ltd , Glasgow; James Bennie & Sons Ltd , Glasgow; G & A Harvey , Glasgow; Craig & Donald Ltd , Johnstone; and Loudon Bros Ltd , Johnstone; all retained their separate autonomy, even though they had amalgamated and produced joint trade catalogues. By the 1960s the company had offices in England at Leeds, Birmingham, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and London. In the late 1960s it became an associate of Wilkins-Mitchell and in 1982 it went into liquidation.
