Scope and Content

Manuscript volume containing an account of the public debts at the Exchequer, exclusive of the deficiencies of parliamentary grants, 14 Mar 1716, prepared for [Spencer Compton, Viscount Pevensey] Speaker of the House of Commons, from material in various Finance Acts.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Exchequer was responsible for receiving and dispersing the public revenue. The lower Exchequer, or receipt, closely connected with the permanent Treasury, was an office for the receipt and payment of money. The upper Exchequer was a court sitting twice a year to regulate accounts.

This manuscript was bought from Mr P M Barnard in 1913 as an addition to the Goldsmith's Library of Economic Literature.
